For at least 20 years Susan Squires has been developing her encaustic process. Originally influenced by ancient icons, Italian Cosmatesque floors, and the spacial quiet of cathedrals, Squires finds this has lead to further investigations into the act of combining more than one perspective and enhancing altering or creating rhythms and structures. It all speaks of time transcended and calls to mind the search for the meaning of our place in the Universe. Although Squires employs the grid as a rational tool, most of the decisions needed to create the final structure, while based on the printed matter underneath, are intuitive.

A symbol of absolute enlightenment, strength, and elegance, the circle represents many things becoming one and is a metaphor for centering on essence. 

Squires sees these paintings as quiet meditations with psychological and spiritual implications. Squires is very concerned about the current climate crisis. Plus she is interested in having a dialogue between ancient way of knowing and our modern world view.The work deals with memory, loss, unease and movement. Squires is influenced by natural growth forms, events in the world /her life, sacred icons and geometry. There is always mystery.
